Hemorrhoidal disease affects more people than you might think.5 It is important to recognize the causes and symptoms in order to better manage it.
Hemorrhoidal veins are venous anal structures that are part of the anatomy of our body. Exposure to certain risk factors can lead to an increase in venous pressure and abnormal dilation of these venous structures. This dilation can give rise to hemorrhoidal disease, which is characterized by anal pain, bleeding, itching and discomfort.4
1 in 10 people suffer from hemorrhoidal disease.5
Usually, acute symptoms of hemorrhoidal disease recur in 25% of cases6 , but only a quarter of the patients consult their doctor.
The symptoms of hemorrhoids can lead to daily discomfort. If you suffer from hemorrhoids, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms: 4,7,8
Bleeding characterized by the occurrence of bright red blood during defacation
Itching of the anus
Anal pain or discomfort, which occurs especially soon after defacation, when sitting or when making movements
Swelling which are due to the descent and protrusion (or prolapse) of hemorrhoids
Your lifestyle has an influence on the control of hemorrhoids. If you suffer from hemorrhoids, there are some precautions that can help control the disease: 9,10
Favor a high-fiber diet that regulates intestinal transit to combat constipation: fresh fruit and vegetables.
Avoid spicy food, alcohol and tobacco, which are factors known to promote venous congestion
Drink at least 1.5 liters of water a day
Try to go to the bathroom at a fixed time, avoiding intense exertion or straining
Engage in regular physical activity
